    Overview

    A heart attack occurs when the flow of blood to the heart is severely reduced or blocked. The blockage is usually due to a buildup of fat, cholesterol and other substances in the heart (coronary) arteries.

    Major Warning Signs

  1. Chest pain or discomfort: Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center or left side of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes or that goes away and comes back.
  2. Upper body discomfort: Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  3. Shortness of breath: This can occur with or without chest discomfort.
  4. Cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.


    5. What to do

    If you or someone else has these symptoms, call emergency medical help immediately. Do not drive yourself to the hospital unless there are no other options.
